Hillside is a developing suburb made up of multiple housing estates. Established plane trees which are remnants of the suburb's farming days give the area a more historic feel.

Calder Park Raceway, which features a dragstrip and the famous Thunderdome is just a stone's throw away. The Keilor Public Golf Course in neighbouring Keilor allows residents access to great facilities including an 18-hole course an a driving range. Organ Pipes National Park, a 300 acre area of protected native land which includes the natural geological phenomenon of the Organ Pipes, is also nearby.

While only one primary school, Parkwood Green Primary School, resides in the suburb, there are other schools in the surrounding areas. Watergardens Station is just a five minute drive away, and this allows residents an easy half hour commute into the city. It's also just a thirty minute drive into the city along the Calder and Tullamarine freeways
